JOHNSON Mr. William Dan' Johnson age 80 of Sedalia, N. C. died Tues day morning, July 8th at the V.A. Hospital in Durham, N. C. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 13th at 2:00 p.m. at the Betheny United Church of Christ. Rev. Geo. Gaye will officiate. Burial will follow in church cemetery. MARTIN Mrs. Mary Harris Martin, age 71, a resident of 1116 Alamance Road died at Moses Cone Me morial Hospital Monday, July 8th following several weeks ill ness. Shail Troxler, 74, of 2514 Liberty Road, died Wednesday, July 10 at Wesley Long Hospital where he had been a patient for two weeks. Funeral services were conducted 4:00 p.m. Thurs day at Alamance Presbyterian Church where he was a trustee and deacon. The body was at Lambeth - Troxler Funeral Home. He was secretary-treasurer of the Southside Hardware Co., member of the South Greens , boro Exchange Club, Sportsmen I Wildlife Club, South Greensboro | Businessmen's Association and ; the General Greene Council of Boy Scouts. Survivors are his widow, the former Hattie Brown; a son, George Troxler of Lexington; brothers, Porter, Robert G. and Hubert Troxler, all of Greens boro; sisters, Mrs. Blanche Bow man of Julian, Mrs. Mayo Weatherly and Mrs. Swannie Edwards, both of Greensboro. (Continued on Pa *? 8) United Institutional Baptist Church Reports $1,033.00 In Baby Contest Ward Five of United Institu tional Baptist Char oh haa com pleted a successful year by re porting to the church fl, 033.00, which amount brines Its total for the year to more than $2,700.00 which means that Ward Five has exceeded its qnota for the year by more than $700.00. The crowning efforts of the wards achievement was the work done in promoting the An nual Baby Contest, which has just ended. The personalities shown in the rroup photographed above are some of those responsible for the great financial success shown in this contest. From left to right: Miss Au drey Guthrie, who headed a group in the ward that sponsor ed Sylvia Beatrice, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Cheery. She is being held hy her mother, Mrs. Cherry. They turned in more than $269.00. Next to them are Mrs. David Lawson, Jr., and her son, David Lawson, III. Mrs. Lawson is of Reldsville, N. C. This baby was sponsored by Mrs. Fiorina Whitehead who j came in second with more than $335.00. Mrs. Whitehead is the! assistant ward leader and oo-or dlnator of all the wards pro crams. Wise, Lead er of Ward Five. Wise Photo DR. S. E. DUNCAN, PRESIDENT OF LIVINGSTONE COLLEGE DIES SALISBURY (AP)? Dr. Sam uel E. Duncan, president of Liv ingtone College in Salisbury since 1958, died Wednesday af ternoon after becoming ill at his home. He was 63. Dr. Duncan was pronounced dead on arrival at Rowan Me morial Hospital. He had suffered two illnesses in 1967. In 1957, he was elected presi dent of the North Carolina Council of Churches, becoming the first Negro elected to the post. He was named to the North Carolina Board of Higher Educa tion in 1965 and had been a member of the North Carolina Board of Welfare and the board of the North Carolina Fund. Dr. Duncan was a native of Middlesboro, Ky. He moved to Salisbury with his family at an early age and was graduated froirt Livingstone College In 1927. He received master's and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell Uni versity In New York. He was named president of the prredominahtly Negro col DR. SAMUEL E. DUNCAN lege in Salisbury in 1958 and during the last 10 years he had directed a multimillion dollar development program on the campus. He took over the college presi dency alter serving as principal (Continued on Page 8) 3 Administrative Deans Appointed At A.&T. By RICHARD MOORE A&T News Bureau The appointment of three new deans and the creation of a qew School of Arts and Sciences were announced Wednesday at A&T State University. Dr. Lewis C. Dowdy, president of A&T, said that Dr. Reginald Amory had been named dean of the School of Engineering, Dr. Jewellean S. Mangaroo had been named Dean of the School of Nursing and Dr. Arthur F. Jack son would be dean of the newly created School of Arts and Sci ences. The .appointments are effect ively immediately, except that of Dr. Mangaroo. She will assume her position on February 1. Her predecessor, Mrs. Naomi Wynn will remain until February as dean and then return to full time teaching as a professor of nursing. Dr. Dowdy also announced that Dr. Walter C. Daniel, chair man of the English Department, has been appointed chairman of the new Division of Humanities. (Continued on Pas* 4)
